Question by : What is the best option in joining the army as a reserve with a 4 year degree? I am 29 and have decided that I would like to join the military. I have a degree in Communications with an electronics minor. I did well on the ASVAB and in the GT area. I was looking at joining up and entering the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program and attending OCS. After talking with my local Army Recruiter, one of the supervisors recommended that I enlist and pursue a position as Warrant Officer instead, citing that that route offers quicker advancement and a more fulfilling career as it doesn't leave one stuck pushing paperwork and that with my degree, I would have a better chance of getting waived in sooner, particularly if I pursued a career in signal (the head recruiter used to be on the board for warrant officer approvals). Also, as I have $ 20k in college loans, it would alleviate that debt as well as providing funds for continuing my education: not to mention a better signing bonus. Just looking for some opinions from outside the recruiting office. I would definitely be going Reserves. I have heard more than a few words of caution on joining the military. I am wondering if the Recruiters are promoting the Warrant Officer path in an attempt to get me to go reserve enlisted vs ocs. Also, as i understand it, i wouldn't really have any call as to what i go into if I choose to go Reserves OCS, but if I went enlisted, I would get to choose what I wanted to do: do I have this right? Best answer for What is the best option in joining the army as a reserve with a 4 year degree?:

Well you have a few things to choose from but you need to understand the role of a Commissioned Officer versus a Warrant Officer before you decide. A Commissioned Officer will typically spend his career alternating between Command and Staff positions. As a Commander they will be in charge of different size units depending on their rank. In staff positions they will focus on one area (planning, operations, logistics, etc.) and assist the unit Commander with making decisions about how and when to use available resources. That means either way you go, you spend a lot of time doing things outside your area of expertise. Commissioned Officers have more responsibility and get paid more money, and it also looks better on a resume after the military. A Warrant Officer gets paid more than Enlisted, but you have to be Enlisted for a few years before you can apply to be a WO. The only exception is if you want to be a WO Pilot, then ayone with any amount of experience can apply. Typically a WO candidate needs at least 5-8 years of experience in their field (civilian education and experience counts towards that) and will also need to be at least an E5 or E6 to apply. The benefit of being a WO is that you work solely in your field and are a Subject Matter Expert and don't spend your time getting shuffled between Command and Staff positions. You will also be afforded better training opportunities than Enlisted or CO's in the same field because they expect you to be an expert. Another thing to consider is that it is almost impossible to go right into the AGR program. I've only seen one person do it in 14 years and his dad was a General in the USAR. Almost all positions in the AGR program are minimum E6 level which means you have to be at least an E5 before you can even apply. Then there are other things that I wont get into in order to get a position, but there are many applicants for every position and a brand new private has virtually zero chance of getting in. I think you first need to decide between Active and Reserve. With AD or Reserve you will go in as an E4 with a degree, and will be able to apply to be a WO sooner than most people, but it will still be a few years. With Reserve you can probably get a higher paying job and still be getting experience in your field until you meet the other prerequisites for becoming a WO. With a BS degree you would be able to apply to be a CO sooner then a WO. Keep in mind though that if you want to be an AD WO then you need to be on AD when you apply. If you want to be a USAR WO then you need to be in the USAR when you apply. It's not impossible to cross over, but AD Soldiers will be a priority over AD slots for training, and USAR Soldiers will be a priority for USAR slots for training. It's all about the budget. You can get your loans paid off by joining either AD or Reserve, but every job doesn't come with that incentive (or any other incentive for tha matter) so you just need to look at the incentives for each job before deciding and make sure that it has what you need.
