Question by smellyfoot â¢: Obama is now letting people keep UNEMPLOYMENT benefits if they enroll in college? What is up with that? If you are going to college, you should take out student loans to pay for your living expenses - like every other college student does. If you want to go to college, why should I pay any of your expenses? That just doesn't make any sense to me.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090508/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_jobs Best answer for Obama is now letting people keep UNEMPLOYMENT benefits if they enroll in college? Because he is a moronic idiot. And you know who's getting these benefits right?
Answer by Felonius_Monkey
You think paying people to do nothing is fine, but if they try to improve their situation they're on their own - that's just backwards.
Answer by Meh
People on unemployment have always been able to take college courses. He's just given them more access to loans & grants. This actually makes sense as it will enable workers who have lost jobs due to frictional unemployment to retrain - as for living expenses, I'm not aware of any student loans for that. I know that my student loans pay for a portion of my classes, but that's it.

That's nice. So when I was working to pay for the school I was also going to, I could have simply got fired and got paid to go to school. Glad to see the system help those that try to do the right thing.

Actually it sounds like a good idea. If a persons job skills are outdated they have a better chance of finding a job by furthering their education. Most colleges have job placement programs. So these people will be better off than if they were staying home or pounding the pavement during a recession. Many of the recently unemployed cannot get grants or student loans because their former income is too high. Employers pay into the unemployment fund. It's like insurance.

Heaven forbid that we should allow American workers to be trained for a new line of work. Why are you Republicans doing everything that you can to make this recession as bad as possible?
Answer by ck4829
Because the wealthy have yet to "trickle down" the prosperity to the rest of us and create jobs. C'mon wealthy people! Republicans said giving you tax cuts would create jobs and prosperity! Why are you holding out on us?

Wow. That ticks me off. In the real world you get a job and/or take out student loans. Well, wait a minute, no I'm not ticked off. I expect this from PRESBO! Just another day in the "Obama Years"! And for the people making comments defending this, what about the people with student loans out there who did what they had to do to get an education? They can take out a damn loan too. The government doesn't need to pay for an "optional" education. We all have to sacrifice if we want further education. I would like to go back to school too and get my Master's but lucky for me I'd have to pay for it myself. The way it should be. Obama wants to "change" the rules for everything. Unemployment isn't a grant to go back to school. It serves a purpose to bridge the time you are looking for another job, not to get an education. They can get loans, end of story. But people are going to try and spin it no matter what, I guess. Convict Number 9653 - I know lots of people who have. This includes work study. This is how I look at it. This is a period of time that unemployment is high. People have lost their jobs because companies are cutting back to deal with costs. Extended benefits so you can go to school is wrong. Getting a higher education or training will not help because the problem is LESS JOBS out there. I don't care which way you try to spin it. Unemployment is strictly to help you provide for yourself and family during a time of job loss. And you can't compare this to welfare. It's a necessary evil, because innocent children are involved. If you need welfare go for it, it's out there for those in dire need. But don't make an excuse that they should extend unemployment so you can get more training, it's just not right. There is also an option while YOU ARE WORKING, to purchase private supplemental unemployment insurance. But because you chose not to get it is not other peoples problem. Your employer pays the insurance for what you are collecting now. I just cannot sympathize, with the people and some of their answers here, sorry. Rules are rules and they should apply to everyone. I cannot stand when the government is constantly changing the rules of the game just to benefit one group of people.

Pounding the pavement during a recession, looking for non-existent jobs makes no sense to me. If a person is unemployed anyway, perhaps it might be better for society if they became better skilled, so they will be more employable later. Some states now offer unemployment retraining benefits if you can establish more training or a degree would be useful in helping you get a job. Our unemployment compensation, which is supposed to be insurance paid by employers, not a handout from the taxpayer, is barely a subsistence payment anyway. It is not for deadbeats. You have to have been working to earn unemployment benefits. And you should pay for someone else's education is for the same reason that I should pay for street repairs when I only use the subway. Because that's the sort of thing that people in civilized societies do.

He will pay people to go to school but he cut the funding for death benefits for law enforcement officers. They were getting $ 110 million now they will get $ 60 million. Look at your area, How many of your police die yearly? Do they give us their lives so we can poop on their families? I see the police academy's being hard to fill in the future. I see less officer's staying with the police departments. D@mn the Government to he!l

I don't see anything wrong with it. If someone is trying to better themselves so they can join the workforce and not be a bum or making 2 cents an hour at McDonald's then it's fine with me. Taxes will have to go for extended benefits, but I think a lot of people forget that until you hit that wall where it changes to "extended" you are collecting money that you put into the system yourself right out of your former paychecks. Employers pay it but they make sure they make that back out of your paycheck in one way or another. It's why that next raise might be $ 1 less than it should be. I pay for so much crap I don't approve of, we all do. Some of it you just have to bite the bullet. I don't mind this, but I might mind about something else that you think taxes should go for.
Congress may have averted a doubling of interest rates on millions of new federal student loans, but the fix is only for a year, leaving students on edge over whether they'll face a similar increase next summer. Student loan interest rates stay flat, but benefit for students remains murky ...
