Question by : Fordham or Stony Brook for Med? I'm in between Stony Brook and Fordham and I'm looking to go to med school after. At Stony Brook, my estimated cost per year is $ 7,400, which includes tuition, dorm, transportation fees, and the meal plan. At Fordham, my estimated cost per year is $ 12,550 without loans and it only covers my tuition (I'll be commuting to Fordham). According to the university, I'd need another $ 6k for books, transportations, and costs for other things like food and whatnot. I appealed for more financial aid today as well as a job with work study at Fordham. Work Study will give me an addition $ 3k per year. Im not sure how much additional financial aid they will give me. Im having a bit of trouble determining whether the addition cost of Fordham compared to Stony Brook is actually worth it. My Reasons for Fordham: 1. Only 30 students in the pre-med course, which means that help from my professors is available most of the time. 2. 100% med school acceptance rate at Fordham. 3. The professors have been reviewed and rated very well. 4. Research Opportunities 5. National Ranking and Prestige of the University. My Reason for Stony Brook: 1. Cheaper- I don't have to get a job, although work-study is only 2 hours a day for a couple of days per week at Fordham, 2. Dorming will take away the stress of having to commute two hours a day. Also, one of my biggest problems during high school was not being able to focus so much at home, because its usually loud at home. A friend told me that If i go to Fordham, I could just go to the library and do all my studies there, but then another friend brought it to my attention that I'm going to have to carry my textbooks if I planned to go about studying that way. 3. Research Opportunities 4. Better guidance when it comes to dealing with the medical school application process. Now I know that the GPA and my MCAT scores are the most important aspect of the medical school application, but Im not sure which school will be the best in respect to my GPA. The smaller classes at Fordham make it easier to understand the material and I'll be able to consult my teacher if I need help. Several online threads says that Stony brook has much larger classes, because most of the students who attend are on the pre-med track as well. It says that most of the time I'll be graded by a TA and wont have the opportunity to ask my teacher a question. Stony Brook will be less stressful because I wont have to get a job and Ill be much more focused when im away from home. I just want to know what you guys think? What do you think is more valuable to the education? Do you think that getting rid of the stress that comes with a job, the commute, and living at home is more important than having a small class? ehab... i would do this as cheaply as i could, so i wouldn't come out of school $ 100,000 in debt...so i'd choose the commuting/living at home option...and whatever you do, buy your medical textbooks online, and not at the college bookstore: http://amzn.to/MedicalTextbooksMedBooks
