Alright, so I have read a bunch of answers to related questions like this one but was still wanting to ask and get my own answers. My Girlfriend is 19 years old, about to go off to college and in need of about $ 3000. Her parents as of recently have decided not to pay for her college tuition, so she decided to try and get student loans. Of course as we all know almost all student loans require either a cosigner or a credit check. Since her parents decided not to help pay for her college, she could not get them to cosign on a loan. She has tried other family members as well and still no go. Since she is only 19, she has not yet had the opportunity to start her credit. She has gone to the financial aid office for the college she has chosen and they basically denied her any help and told her there was "nothing they could do" for her do to her FAFSA information. She has obviously filled out FAFSA and since she is in Colorado, the COF. Unfortunately when filling out FAFSA, we all know that it asks for parent's financial status such as taxes, income and the like. Her EFC (estimated family contribution) was so high that she was denied practically everything in grants and scholarships. She was awarded one Stafford loan, subsidized I believe, but that, with the money FAFSA and the COF did give her, was not enough. She has also tried to negotiate with her bank (Wells Fargo) but they too require a co-signer, which as i said is out of the question. My initial question is are there any options left for her to pay for school? Classes start in a week, and because of her parents decision she is now forced to either figure out this situation on her own, or push her education back and drop from the college. I have heard of something in regards to "small signature loans" from banks, but I am not sure exactly what those are and if she is even able to sign for one. I know she is too young but does she have any children? She can get financial aid if she is married or has children. Anyway, FAFSA does not require credit checks unless it is a Parent loan plus. She can go to college but she might need to go to a college with a lower tuition. Or she can take 2 classes at a time. If she can find a way to get a job at the college they usually for allow employees 2 free classes. The college also has its own scholarship program-tell her to find out what they have. COS is not the only college in Colorado- find another college that will give her a better award. Not all colleges are the same in regards to financial aid. Tell her to do some research. Good luck

Beware of going outside of the college student loan programs for assistance. The financial aid people are there to assist you for a reason. The school wants you to attend and will do everything to help you finance it. The other kind-hearted appearing people who are willing to "help" you outside of the school system are out to rip you off. It is all a scam. Remember: If it is too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.
